a pretty honest review of Harry Potter

So. Harry Potter. Warnings where there are spoilers, otherwise it’s just a little commentary on the prettiness, etc.

Honestly, it was pretty good. I don’t have much to say about it. I try not to take this sort of thing too seriously when it comes to criticizing film, mostly because I realize it’s for entertainment and not necessarily for actual art. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure (in fact, I know) that they’re trying to create a piece of art when they make this film. They want to take what J.K. Rowling originally shaped and mold it a little for themselves. Perfectly acceptable. So when I say I try to regard more as entertainment than as an actual attempt at art, I’m not diminishing the prettiness of the film at all. In fact that’s one of the things I so enjoy about it. Reading about magical things in a book is definitely exciting, but it’s not the same as getting to see the magic on the big screen. So I enjoyed the prettiness of it for sure.

I noticed while watching this film that as the kids have grown up, I really love the way all of the girls look (mostly…I disliked Lavender’s looks. Not sure why.), but I really don’t love any of the boys’ aesthetic traits. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Harry (duh!) and Ron (*swoon*) and I will always have a soft spot for Draco (mostly the books’ influencing), but I’m not particularly impressed by the way any of them are aesthetically. Maybe it’s because I’ve made them a certain way in my head according to the books, and none of them really look the way I’d like them to. *shrug* I dunno. I do have to say, though, that Ron’s big shoulders certainly got to me. I’m a sucker for nice shoulders…Ron seems like he’d have nice ones under those cute sweaters he wears. Side note about the girls: They’re all very pretty, but in distinct ways, and I like that. They all look differently pretty…if that makes sense? Luna will always be the “cutest” in my mind; I love her blonde hair! It’s so…blonde! Ha. And Hermione…well, I’ll always love Hermione. More so than any of the other girls. Cliche, I know. Anyhow…

Here there be spoilers, mateys!
Two more things, firstly: similarity to the books. I’m fully aware that plenty of people will say, “Look at the movies for themselves, apart from the books.” But I couldn’t help but be disappointed by the removal of the sweet/epic/awesome battle after Dumbledore’s death. I’m sure (hope?) there will be some scenes at the very least from the battle in the next movie. But for goodness’ sake! And Fred! Fred dies in that battle! And stuff! Lots of wizards fighting each other, and Tonks and Lupin show up, and so do the Weasley parentals, if I’m not mistaken. So I was more than a little upset that I didn’t get to see the battle. Something I was really looking forward to. Hopefully it’ll be in the next movie!~

Secondly, the “happy” feelings. I felt like the happy ending was way too…abrupt. It was like, “Oh Dumbledore died, depressing OMG HAPPY FRIENDS WILL BE OKAY END MOVIE.

” I realize it’s Disney, but the book itself doesn’t end on a very hopeful note. It’s downright depressing. So why didn’t Disney do it that way? I know, kids. Children are watching it, it can’t be too dark. Which is sad, because the increasing darkness as the series progresses was definitely part of its appeal. (I like morbid, depressing things. So sue me.) So, I was sad that they toned down the depressing stuff.
/spoilers, yo dawwwwwggggg

I don’t remember there being as much romance in the books as there was in the movie, but Joe said to the contrary, they played up the romance just as much as Rowling did in the books. So accuracy, there, I guess. I just felt like it was too much the focus of the story for a bit. Merh.

But overall? My opinion is that it was splendid. I enjoyed it a lot. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat (literally sometimes!) even though I knew what was going to happen. So yeah. Go see it, it’s good. :)
